The Copyright Act (NZ)

The Copyright Act 1994 is a New Zealand law that protects people's original work. It gives creators rights over how their work is copied, shared and used. This is important for IT because websites, software, photos, videos and other digital work can be protected.

Māori Traditional Knowledge

Mātauranga Māori means Māori knowledge. It includes Māori culture, language, creativity and cultural practices. It is passed down through generations.

Māori Cultural Property

Copyright can protect the specific physical expression of some mātauranga Māori, but the underlying ideas, content or style cannot always be protected by copyright. Traditional knowledge can also be difficult to protect because it may belong to a collective group rather than one individual.
